Dr. Lorena Gaspar is an associate professor of Cosmetic Technology at Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. She did her Master and PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at University of Sao Paulo and a stage at ZEBET (National Centre for Documentation and Evaluation of Alternative Methods to Animal Experiments) at the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, Germany in 2009. Her work is focused on photostability, efficacy and phototoxicity evaluation of sunscreens and anti aging formulations, by using in vitro monolayer cell culture and reconstructed human skin models. Coordinates the Laboratory of Cosmetic Technology Applied to Photoprotection, associated no RENAMA (National Network of Alternative Methods) of the MCTIC.

He is an author of over 600 publications (H-index, 90), co-inventor of several patents, the editor of five books, member of over 10 editorial boards of international journals, and the editor-in-chief of Pharmaceutical Biology. He was the recipient of a Research Career Development Award from the National Cancer Institute and a Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, performed in the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology at the University of Munich. He has directed the research of numerous doctoral students, postdoctoral associates, and visiting scholars. He was elected Senior University Scholar at UIC, UIC Inventor of the Year, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and recipient of the Volwiler Research Award by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy in 2014. He recently received an honorary doctorate from Roskilde University in Denmark. His research interests are predominately in the areas of biology-driven natural product drug discovery and characterization, with primary emphasis in the fields of cancer chemotherapy and cancer chemoprevention. Leda Castilho is Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). She is a Chemical Engineer and holds a PhD degree in Biochemical Engineering from the Technical University of Branschweig (Germany). She has been as a visiting scientist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH, USA) and at the University of Bielefeld. Uwe Marx (born 26 June 1964 in Berlin) is a German physician and biotechnologist, and is one of the world's leading
researchers in the fields of organ-on- a-chip technology and antibody production. In 1989 at the Charité Berlin, Germany,
he planned to recreate organs like liver, lung, or immune system in vitro and to mimic organ functions and interactions
outside a living organism. He was initially able to develop a human artificial lymph node model (in vitro) for
immunogenicity tests. Since 2007, Uwe Marx has been working together with other scientists to reproduce the human
organism on a microfluidic chip at a scale of 1:100,000. In 2010, he became head of the Multi-Organ- Chip group at the
Technische Universität Berlin, Germany and simultaneously became the CEO of TissUse GmbH, a spin-off of the
University to commercialize the Multi-Organ- Chip platform. The aim is to shorten the entire drug development process
as well as to reduce animal experiments and drug testing in humans during clinical trials. These microfluidic devices can
also be used to test other substances (e.g. chemicals, cosmetic ingredients) for their safety and efficacy.

Amine Kamen is Professor of Bioengineering at McGill University, and Canada Research Chair in Bioprocessing of Viral Vaccines. He is Researcher Emeritus of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) where he was employed until early 2014, as head of the Process Development section of the Human Health Therapeutics Portfolio.

Dr. Barry O’Keefe received a B.S in Botany from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Following graduation in 1994 Dr. O’Keefe immediately joined the National Cancer Institute’s Laboratory of Drug Discovery Research and Development to study novel proteins from natural products extracts. Dr. O’Keefe currently leads the Protein Chemistry and Molecular Biology Section and is Deputy Chief of the Molecular Targets Laboratory at the Center for Cancer Research, NCI, NIH which specializes in the isolation and identification of novel bioactive proteins, the identification of specific molecular targets for cancer and viral infections, and the development of novel assay systems for the evaluation and screening of natural products against biochemical targets of interest. Dr. Bruce Levine, Barbara and Edward Netter Professor in Cancer Gene Therapy, is the Director of the Clinical Cell and Vaccine Production Facility (CVPF) in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Abramson Cancer Center, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He received a B.A. in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Immunology and Infectious Diseases from the Johns Hopkins University. The CVPF develops and tests novel cell and gene therapies in single center and multi-center clinical trials in patients with hematologic malignancies, solid tumors, HIV infection, and genetic disease. Twenty clean rooms and Quality Control laboratories staffed by 60 clinical laboratory scientists and regulatory professionals support the mission. Several CVPF trials have been first-in-human trials, including the first use of a lentiviral vector, the first infusions of zinc finger nuclease genome-modified cells, and the first use of lentivirally-modified cells to treat cancer. Dr. Levine has overseen the production, testing and release of 2700 cellular products administered to >1000 patients in clinical trials since 1996. Through these technologies, personalized and enhanced immunity has been engineered. T lymphocytes from HIV+ subjects have been rendered resistant to HIV infection and reinfused. T lymphocytes from cancer patients have been redirected with chimeric antigen receptors to hunt and destroy their malignancies, an investigational therapy that received the first Breakthrough Designation from the FDA for an academic institution and is currently in commercial development. Dr. Levine is co-inventor on 22 issued US patents and co-author of >120 publications with a Google Scholar citation h-index of 65. He has been interviewed by the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, BBC, and other international media outlets.

An Electronics Engineer and a Physicist, Brito Cruz is a professor at the Gleb Wataghin Physics Institute, of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), He was the Rector of Unicamp from 2002 to 2005.
He graduated in electronic engineering at the Aeronautics Technology Institute of (ITA in the Portuguese acronym). He took a master's degree and a doctorate at Unicamp's Gleb Wataghin Physics Institute. He has been a professor at the Unicamp’s Physics Institute since 1982. Presently is a full professor at the Quantum Electronics Department.
Brito Cruz was a visiting researcher at the Quantum Optics Laboratory at the Universitá di Roma, at the Femtosecond Research Laboratory at the Universitè Pierre et Marie Curie, and a resident researcher at the AT&T's Bell Laboratories, in Holmdel, New Jersey and in Murray Hill, NJ. Dr. Eduardo Zimmer earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Universidade
Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in 2015. During his Ph.D. he worked
for two years in the McGill Centre for Studies in Aging, Montreal/Canada.
He currently works as a Collaborating Professor at the Department of
Biochemistry (UFRGS) and as an Associate Researcher at the Brain Institute
of Rio Grande do Sul (BraIns). His laboratory combines biochemistry,
pharmacology, behavior and neuroimaging for advancing in the
understanding of Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology, and also in the
development of innovative therapies. Dr. Zimmer received several awards
and honors in the past yeas, and, in 2017, he has been awarded with the “II
Scientists and entrepreneurs of the year award" in the Mental Health
category from NanoCell Institute. As his main scientific contributions, we
can cite the role of astrocytes in neuroimaging, which has been recently
published in the prestigious journal Nature Neurosciene.
Edward A. Dennis is Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and of Pharmacology in the School of Medicine at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). He received his BA from Yale and a Ph.D. from Harvard, a Doctorate in Medicine (honorary) from Goethe University in Frankfurt Germany, a Doctorate (honorary) from the University of Lyon INSA, in Lyon France, and he served as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Dennis’ career research focus has been on inflammation, lipid metabolism, phospholipases, eicosanoids and lipidomics. He has authored over 380 publications and patented numerous inventions. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Lipid Research and Director of the LIPID MAPS Consortium, a NIH supported initiative started in 2003 to develop the lipidomics field. Dr. Dennis was named an inaugural Fellow of the AAAS in 1984 and was the recipient of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s Avanti Award in Lipid Enzymology, the European Federation for Lipid Science and Technology’s European Lipid Science Award, and Yale Universities Yale Medal. Dr. Dennis served as Chair and President of the Keystone Symposia Board of Directors from 1996-2004 where he is currently an Emeritus Trustee, and on the Yale University Council. He recently served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Gordon Research Conferences and currently serves as Chair of the Board of the ResMed Foundation, and on the Boards of the Eicosanoid Research Foundation and the La Jolla Playhouse.

Helder Nakaya is an assistant professor at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in the Department of Clinical Analyses and Toxicology, School of Pharmaceutical Science. He has a PhD in Molecular Biology with extensive training in Bioinformatics. He is an expert in Systems Vaccinology, an interdisciplinary field that combines systems-wide measurements, networks, and predictive modeling in the context of vaccines and infectious disease. Dr. Nakaya has developed systems biology approaches to understand and predict the mechanisms of vaccine induced-immunity for Yellow Fever, seasonal Influenza, Meningococcal, and Tularemia vaccines. His lab is focused on investigating the basis of infectious diseases using computational systems biology.
Additionally, Dr. Nakaya is an adjunct professor at Emory University School of Medicine in the Department of Pathology.
Ian Baxendale obtained his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Pavel Kocovsky at the University of Leicester. He then moved to a postdoctoral position with Prof. Steven V. Ley at the University of Cambridge. In 2003 he was awarded a Wolfson Royal Society Fellowship. In 2008 he was promoted to a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Chemistry and then in 2009 was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship. In 2012 he moved to Durham to take up the Chair of Synthetic Chemistry. His current research interests are the design and implementation of new enabling technologies such as Flow Chemical Synthesis (FCS), Synthesis Automation Methodologies (SAM), microwave reactors and immobilised reagents and scavengers to expedite complex chemical syntheses.
Jan Tytgat (o6 January 1963) is Full Professor in Toxicology & Pharmacology and Head of the Laboratory Toxicology & Pharmacology at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and continued his career by obtaining a PhD in Physiology at the Medical School of the KU Leuven. From 1990-92 he has stayed at the Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA) for a post-doctoral training.
He holds the chair of toxicology and pharmacology at KU Leuven with tuition and research in different areas of toxicology in the faculties of medicine, pharmaceutical and bio-agricultural sciences. He is also Director of the division ‘Biopharmaceutical Sciences’ of Leuven Research & Development (LRD), a bio-incubator for his research in drug discovery.

Dr Margaret Magdesian has a BSc in Pharmacy and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of São Paulo. She was a Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro studying receptor-ligand interactions in the brain. Tired of the slow, expensive and inefficient process of drug development, in 2008 she moved to Canada and in collaboration with researchers from McGill University, she developed a new product to increase standardization, precision, and reproducibility of cellular assays. Recently, she launched a company called ANANDA Devices (www.AnandaDevices.com) to commercialize this product and stimulate other scientists to achieve reproducible and impactful results faster. Dr Magdesian’s innovation has the potential to dramatically accelerate the drug development cycle of new therapies for people that need it.
María A. Balboa obtained her B.S. in Biology, M.S. in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Immunology from the Autónoma University of Madrid, Spain in 1984, 1986 and 1992 respectively. To receive training in lipid signaling she moved to U.S.A. where she worked as a Posdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Pharmacology in the University of California at San Diego under the supervision of Prof. Paul Insel. In 1995 she moved to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the same university to work under the supervision of Prof. Edward Dennis, and remained there for 5 years. She returned to Spain in 2000 as a Spanish Reserach Council's Assistant Professor at the University of Valladolid School of Medicine. She is currently Full Professor at this institution. Her work is focused on how innate immune cells respond to stimuli by changing their lipid composition. Her recent work has revealed a relationship between the regulation of lipid metabolism and the harmfulness of the immune response.

Mark is based at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) Northern Ireland where he holds position as Director of Research for Food Safety and Nutrition. The major focus of my research is to identify and characterize the participation of specific immune components on several infectious and inflammatory diseases. I obtained my Ph.D from Sao Paulo University in Brazil, with a strong background in Immunology and Virology. My primary focus as a researcher is to understand the participation of key molecules, such as cellular receptors and differentially activated signaling pathways on immune regulation and activation following infectious diseases. My recently established laboratory at Fiocruz (located on Northeast Brazil, the major affected area on Zika initial outbreak) was one of the first research centers to indentify Zika virus circulation in Brazil. Also, current projects on viral dynamics (genetic variability) of positive strand RNA viruses are being developed in my group. By this, we were able to establish a surveillance system to monitor circulating arboviruses in endemic areas. I have an extensive training on technologies widely applied to Immunology investigation such as cell cytometry and sorting, animal handling/experimentation and molecular biology. Ongoing research projects in my laboratory aim to elucidate the pathogenesis of the positive strand RNA Zika virus. We are primarily interested in study how this virus is recognized by the immune system and how the elicited immune response correlates with disease manifestation.

Andersen (Departments of Chemistry and Earth and Ocean Sciences). Since 1993, Dr. Berlinck’s research interest included the discovery of pharmacologically active chemicals from marine invertebrates. During the period between 2001-2006 participated in the National Cooperative Drug Discovery Group program funded by the National Institutes of Health, leaded by Professor Chris M. Ireland (Department of Medicinal Chemistry, University of Utah, USA), working in collaboration with Professors Ireland and Andersen and the Pharmaceutical Company Wyeth-Ayerst. In 1998 started the first Brazilian program on the investigation of microbial secondary metabolism, including Streptomycete and fungi. Dr. Berlinck established collaborations with a number of Brazilian and International investigators, including specialists in cancer, inflammation and immunomodulation, antibiotics (including tuberculosis) and parasitic diseases. His interest in the discovery of useful biologically active molecules proved as fruitful. The discovery of anti-Leishmanial and anti-Chagas parasites is currently a very active program in collaboration with Dr. André Tempone, one of the leading parasitologists in Brazil. More recently Dr. Berlinck’s interests moved towards the understanding of biochemical pathways controlling the biosynthesis of biologically active secondary metabolites produced by fungi in culture conditions. These include complex alkaloids and highly modified polyketides, in collaboration with Professors David H. Sherman (University of Michigan, USA) and Richmond Sarpong (University of California et Berkeley, USA). Dr. Berlinck supervised more than 40 MSc, PhD students and post-doctoral researchers and published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

During my Post-doc, I used Mass Spectrometry to develop new methodologies in food sciences and natural products, chemistry and biochemistry. Now, as a Professor at the University of Campinas, in addition to working with food science, I have broadened my scope by using Metabolomics andMass Spectrometryapplied to the Health and Pharmaceutical Sciences, expanding to areas such as Parasitology, Diagnostics, Toxicology and Drug Compatibility. I currently lead a Research Group at the INNOVARE Biomarkers Laboratory of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Campinas. Our group is pioneering in the application of Metabolomics combined with Mass Spectrometry Imaging, developing comprehensive analytical strategies that study both the qualitative and the quantitative aspects of metabolites and small molecules in various biological samples such as tissues, biological fluids and other natural products.
Stabeli holds Ph.D. in Clinical Biochemistry (2003) by Faculty of the Medicine of the Ribeirão Preto at the São Paulo University (FMRP). Stabeli was Visiting Professor in the Biochemistry and Immunology Department of the FMRP/USP where started to work with single chain antibody engineering through Camel immunization model in collaboration with Pasteur Institute-France. Fascinated with the Biotechnological potential of the Amazonia Forest, Stabeli moved to Porto Velho, Rondonia State where’ve founded the Study Centre of Biomolecules Applied to Public Health (Cebio) at the Federal University of Rondonia. Posteriorly, Stabeli worked to inaugurate the Fiocruz Rondonia, technical scientific unit of Fiocruz, Ministry of Health, where Stabeli was Vice-Director of Research (2006-2008) and Director; In 2013, Stabeli moved from Rio de Janeiro to held the Vice-Presidency of Research and Surveillance of National Fiocruz. Stabeli has coordinate the associate laboratory, NanoSUS, in the National Laboratory of Nanotechnology Program (SISNANO) of the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. In 2017, Stabeli is in charge of the Translational Medicine Platform, bi-institutional project with USP, campus Ribeirão Preto – SP. Stabeli is Titular Researcher/Specialist at Fiocruz and Associate Professor at Medicine Department of São Carlos Federal University; Visiting Professor at Medicine School of Ribeirão Preto (FMRP-USP).

In this same Foundation, he was Coordinator of SUPERA and Coordinator of the PRIME Program - First Innovative Company (FINEP-FIPASE). Still in the professional scope, he worked at the Marista Social Center, at 3M Brazil, at TES Tecnology and Sistems and at the Medical School of Ribeirão Preto, USP. During his undergraduated period, he performed a brief internship with the Bone Marrow Transplant Support Group, and academically, he worked with "Junior FEA Consultoria e Planejamento", in the Social Responsibility and Third Sector Board.

Susan Craddock is Director of the Center for Bioethics, and Professor in the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies and the Institute for Global Studies at the University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on the social determinants of risk to ill health and in particular to infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, and influenza; and the convergence of financial, political, and scientific factors in determining the availability or not of life-saving medications for these diseases in low-income countries. Her latest book, Compound Solutions: Pharmaceutical Alternatives for Global Health, examines the role of product development partnerships in developing new drugs and vaccines for tuberculosis.
